Warm Up Your Workout Routine This Winter
Winter – the season for flannel pajamas, cozy evenings by the fireplace, hot chocolate and …. arthritis-friendly exercise videos?

It isn’t a trick question. All of these are appropriate in the winter when frigid temperatures and snow-covered sidewalks make going outside for a walk less desirable.
Embassy Healthcare reminds you that just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean our activity levels have to freeze up to nothing. There are plenty of ways we can stay active even during the coldest part of the year. Consider the following:
- Exercise videos: When the roads are too treacherous to get out, just fire up the DVD player or computer to work out in your own living room. These arthritis-friendly videos help reduce joint pain by working various parts of your body to improve strength and flexibility.
- Swimming: Spending some time in an indoor pool is a great way to exercise without putting a great strain on your body. Many community fitness centers and YMCAs have pools. Have a friend go with you to make it a fun social activity.
- Head to the mall: Not comfortable walking along snowy or icy walkways on blustery afternoons? Head to the local mall instead and walk in comfort for an hour. Not only is it great exercise, but it’s also great people watching as well and you don’t feel alone even if you’re walking by yourself.
- Don’t just sit there: Yes, we understand the allure of Netflix – trust us. But even on those marathon TV-watching days, make a point of getting up between programs and doing some simple exercises. You can take a quick walk around the block or even walk in place for a few minutes after each show or commercial break. Even doing a couple of chores helps you get off the couch and keep the blood flowing.
- Count your steps: Wearing a fitness tracker does wonders to keep you motivated to stay active. Many devices can notify you when you need to move around more to meet your activity goals.
- Don’t forget to hydrate: Many seniors become dehydrated because they have a diminished sense of thirst and they don’t drink enough fluids. Sipping on water throughout the day and your workout will help you better reap the benefits of exercise.
