You may be hesitant to get the COVID-19 vaccine because you’re unsure how your immune system will respond to the injection. But the older you are, the less likely your body will respond negatively. The CDC has reported fewer side effects in vaccinated individuals who are 55 and older.

Possible Side Effects

Most seniors reported only mild to moderate symptoms following their vaccination.

Common side effects include:

  • Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Dizziness

Studies suggest those symptoms are more likely to occur within three days of your second vaccination or booster shot.

Why You May Experience Side Effects

If you notice any of the previous symptoms, it’s a sign that your body’s immune system is working hard. Fevers and chills are an inflammatory response your body issues to protect you against disease.

While side effects are normal, some seniors may find their bodies do not react to the COVID-19 vaccine at all. That may be the result of your body’s reduced immune response that often accompanies the aging process.

When to Contact Your Doctor

Adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine are rare. The CDC reports only 0.05% of those vaccinated with Pfizer and 1% of those with Moderna experienced vaccine-related complications.

If you’re allergic to the vaccine, your body may have an abnormal immune response.

Symptoms of that anaphylactic shock include:

  • Hives
  • Itching or swelling in the face, lips and throat
  • Coughing or wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cardiac distress
  • Increased heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea

Contact your doctor immediately if those symptoms present at any time after you receive your vaccine.

Easing Your Side Effects

Most of the side effects associated with the COVID-19 vaccines can be addressed with at-home remedies and over-the-counter medication. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen can soothe the pain and swelling around the injection site and reduce fever. Drinking fluids and dressing in several light layers can ease flu-like symptoms.
