You may have noticed your mom or dad’s capabilities have changed. They might be struggling to take care of themselves or their house. And maybe you’re worried about them living on their own.

Signs It’s Time to Consider Assisted Living

Be mindful of your parent’s ability to complete activities of daily living (ADLs). If they exhibit several of the following symptoms, they likely need more support with everyday tasks.

Poor personal hygiene: Does your loved one’s appearance seem more unkempt recently? They may have body odor, forget to brush their teeth or wear the same clothes for several days in a row.

Weight loss: A lack of nutrition or an inability to cook for themselves can cause weight loss. Your parent could be struggling to feed themselves as well.

Worsening medical conditions: Managing chronic health problems can become more difficult with age, so be watchful for deteriorating conditions.

Frequent falls: Physical ailments and a loss of balance put your senior at an increased risk for falls. That also means they’re more likely to fracture or break a bone.

Difficulty managing medication: Is your parent having trouble adhering to their medication schedule? Cognitive impairments can cause forgetfulness, affecting their ability to manage daily tasks like taking their medicine.

Changes in mood or behavior: Increased sadness, aggression, irritability and confusion are common, especially if your parent has dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Trouble with personal finances: Handling numbers can be problematic, so your parent may struggle with paying bills, depositing money and balancing their checkbook.

Having the Conversation

Show compassion when broaching the subject of transitioning to senior living. Your parent has probably lived most of their life independently, so the idea of change can be daunting.

Be prepared for various reactions, including fear, denial and acceptance. Discuss the symptoms you’ve noticed with your parent and why you think assisted living is a viable option.

Here are other tips to consider:

  • Ask your parent to explain their hesitations about moving to an assisted living facility.
  • Identify their expectations for a senior living community.
  • Point out the advantages of assisted living, such as activity programs, provided meals and outings.
  • Research and discuss local residences or communities together.
  • Take them on a tour of a senior community.
  • Ask your loved one for their input and keep them involved in the decision-making process.
  • Be an active listener and let your parent express their emotions.
