positive opportunities post-pandemic

April 12, 2021

We don’t know when we’ll be out of the COVID-19 woods, but with vaccines becoming more readily available, we’re heading in the right direction. The past 12 months have given us time to reflect on the things that are most important and what’s changed for the better. Here are a few positives that have come out of the pandemic.

Better Hygiene

The emphasis on wearing masks, social distancing and handwashing has highlighted the importance of personal hygiene. The focus on proper handwashing, in particular, has improved public awareness about how easy it is to spread germs. Those health practices will continue to slow the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases like the flu.

Remote Accessibility and Delivery

The shift to remote services has been a game-changer for people with disabilities and chronic conditions. Telemedicine appointments are a convenient option for those who have busy schedules or can’t drive themselves to the doctor.

Delivery services have also helped people, particularly seniors living alone, get their groceries and medication without exposing themselves to large crowds. Those delivery options will continue to help people with mobility issues remain independent.

Healthier Habits

Limited access to restaurants meant we had to do more cooking at home, which presented us with opportunities to eat healthier. Cooking for yourself puts you more in control of your diet and portion sizes. And eating healthy will help you achieve other wellness goals.

Many of us also got reacquainted with nature since most public spaces weren’t open for business. Getting outside can make exercise easy and fun. Walking, jogging, cycling and hiking are cost-free ways to squeeze in some cardio and avoid large crowds at the gym.

Appreciation for the Little Things

Perhaps most importantly, the pandemic reminded us to take a step back from the hustle and bustle to appreciate the most important things in life:

  • Family and friends and their well-being
  • Your health
  • Happiness
  • Independence
  • Financial stability

The uncertainty of the past year has reminded us to look for life’s simple joys. Now, face-to-face conversations, dinner around the table, game nights and social outings seem even more special. Remembering that perspective as we move toward a post-pandemic world will help us be more present in our daily lives.
